Step by step

How a crown is made and fitted

Two visits across two to three weeks, or one visit where same-day milling suits the tooth.

  1. Cross-section diagram of a broken molar with remaining sound tooth measured against a dashed outline of the original crown, beside its X-ray

    1. Assessment and X-ray

    20 minutes

How much sound tooth is left decides crown against onlay, and whether a post is needed.

  2. Cross-section diagram comparing a tooth before and after preparation, evenly reduced to a tapered stump with a clean shoulder margin at the gum

    2. Preparation

    60 to 90 minutes

The tooth is shaped under local anesthetic so the crown sits flush at the gum.

  3. Diagram of an intraoral scanner capturing a prepared tooth stump digitally, beside the same stump protected by a temporary crown

    3. Scan and temporary

    30 minutes

A digital impression goes to the lab and a temporary crown protects the tooth meanwhile.

  4. Diagram of a porcelain crown built in three stages from plain coping to layered translucency, beside a shade strip with one tab selected

    4. The lab builds it

    2 to 3 weeks

Porcelain is layered and stained to match the neighboring teeth.

  5. Cross-section diagram of a finished crown seating onto its stump with markers checking the margin, the contact point and the bite

    5. Fit and cement

    45 minutes

Margins, contacts and bite are checked, then it is cemented and polished.

Why a tooth needs a crown

When a filling is no longer enough

A crown wraps the whole tooth rather than facing it. The decision is made from the X-ray and how much sound tooth is left, not from preference.

These are explanatory diagrams, not photographs of patients.

A cracked or broken tooth

Too much structure lost for a filling to hold, or a crack that needs the tooth held together.

What we do: A porcelain crown, two visits over two to three weeks, $1,000 to $1,800. URBN Dental crowns carry a 10 year warranty, conditional on keeping your exams and cleanings.

Heavily worn teeth

Years of grinding have flattened the biting surfaces and shortened the teeth.

What we do: Crowns rebuild height and function, with a night guard so the new work is not worn down the same way.

Extensive decay

Decay covering more of the tooth than a filling can reasonably replace.

What we do: A crown, or a root canal first if the decay has reached the nerve. Machine milled in a digital lab, so fit and shade are consistent.

An old crown with a gray margin

A metal based crown shows a dark line at the gum as the gum recedes. Nothing lifts it.

What we do: Replaced in all ceramic and matched to the shade of the teeth beside it. This is often what makes a smile look dated.
