Why patients get implants

When a tooth needs replacing at the root

An implant is the only treatment that replaces the root as well as the crown, which is why it is the answer to some of these and not others. Find your situation below. One of them is usually treated more cheaply than an implant, and we have left it in on purpose.

These are explanatory diagrams, not photographs of patients. Real URBN Dental cases are shown unretouched in the before and after section.

A missing tooth

A gap where a tooth used to be. The bone underneath begins to shrink without a root loading it, and the teeth either side start to drift.

What we do: An implant replaces the root, then a crown goes on top. $3,000 to $6,000 per tooth, 3 to 6 months, because bone needs 3 to 4 months to fuse to the post.

Bone loss under an old gap

Bone that has gone unloaded for years resorbs in width and height, so there may not be enough left to hold a post.

What we do: A graft first, then the implant. Grafting adds $600 to $1,200 and a few months. A CBCT scan measures what is actually there, and that scan is free with implant treatment.

A tooth cracked past saving

A crack that runs below the gum line cannot be crowned. Keeping it risks infection and further bone loss.

What we do: Extraction and an implant, often at the same appointment where the socket allows. Waiting is what costs bone, so this is the case where timing matters most.

An infected tooth beyond repair

Infection at the root that a root canal cannot resolve, or a tooth that has already failed a root canal.

What we do: The infection is treated first, then the site is left to heal before a post is placed. Never an implant into active infection.

Receding gums around old work

Gum recession exposes root and margins, and around a failing bridge it often signals the abutment teeth are struggling.

What we do: Assessed case by case. Sometimes a graft holds it, sometimes the bridge is replaced with implants so the neighboring teeth stop carrying the load.

How Cleanings Support Implant Planning

Healthy gums play a key role before any implant treatment. Our dental team begins with a deep clean to make sure your gums aren’t swollen or infected. This step may influence the outcome of treatments like same-day or all-on-four dental implants.

Step by step

How a dental implant is placed, step by step

Four appointments across three to six months. The wait in the middle is the bone fusing to the post, and it cannot be rushed.

  1. Cross-section diagram of a 3D cone beam scan measuring bone height and width at the implant site before treatment is planned

    1. Consult and 3D scan

    60 minutes

A cone beam scan shows bone height and width, and where the nerve and sinus sit. This is what decides whether a graft is needed before anything else.

  2. Cross-section diagram of a tooth being removed and the socket grafted to rebuild bone width before an implant is placed

    2. Extraction or graft, if needed

    1 visit

A tooth that has to come out is removed, and a thin ridge is built up. Grafting adds $600 to $1,200 and three to four months.

  3. Cross-section diagram of a titanium implant post threaded into the jaw bone with the gum closed over it

    3. The post goes in

    60 to 90 minutes

A titanium post is placed in the bone under local anesthetic, with sedation available. Most patients work the next day.

  4. Cross-section diagram of bone growing onto the threads of the implant post during the three to four month healing stage

    4. Bone fuses to the post

    3 to 4 months

Osseointegration. You wear a temporary tooth in the gap. Nothing about this stage is optional or shortenable.

  5. Cross-section diagram of the finished implant: post in bone, abutment through the gum and a porcelain crown shaded to the neighbouring teeth

    5. The crown is fitted

    2 visits

A crown is made to the shade of the teeth beside it, then tried, adjusted and cemented. This is the visit where it stops looking like treatment.

We check your gums, bone strength, and nearby teeth to ensure your smile is set for implant placement. If your gums need care, we’ll create a plan that fits your health needs and schedule.

Gum Health and Preventive Support

These symptoms may be early signs of gum-related issues like gingivitis or periodontitis. Our professional cleanings help to get rid of plaque under the gumline, where regular brushing can’t reach. We also teach you how to brush and floss to keep your teeth healthy in the long run. Healthy gums are important for anyone considering implants, as they help support and protect both natural teeth and implant restorations.

Cleanings to Maintain Dental Implants: Dental implants require expert maintenance, much like your natural teeth. Plaque can accumulate near the gumline or crown, putting nearby tissues at risk. Our hygienists have training to clean around implants without harming the prosthetic. We adapt our cleaning tools and methods to meet your needs, whether you have all on 4 dental implants, a single tooth replacement, or dental implants for seniors.

Exploring Dental Implants Katy TXMissing teeth may affect how you eat, speak, and smile. Our dental team may recommend implants because they are known for their durability and natural appearance. Our dental implants Katy TX team offer custom evaluations to check if implants suit you. If you’re searching for a “dental implant dentist near me,” our Katy team provides guided placement and full evaluations.

All-on-4 and Full Mouth Options

All-on-4 implants provide stable support using four strategically placed implants. This method works well to restore a whole arch without putting in each tooth one by one. Similarly, full-mouth dental implants may serve as an alternative to removable dentures for suitable candidates. If you’ve been searching for all on four dental implants in Katy, our implant team knows how to offer choices that match your health history and what you want to achieve.

Same Day Implants: What You Should Know

Same day dental implants give certain patients who meet specific health requirements an option. In eligible cases, this procedure allows for implant placement and temporary crowns in a single visit. This may benefit professionals or older adults who prefer a quicker approach with fewer visits, when medically appropriate. Looking for a local dental implants dentist who offers same-day services? Dental Implants Faq

Answers published on urbndental.com, reviewed September 2026 by Dr. David Nguyen, DMD, MS and Dr. Benjamin Golik, DDS. Tap any line to read the full answer.

Dental implants are typically recommended for patients with healthy gums and sufficient jawbone support.+

Some patients may require preliminary treatments, especially if they have certain health conditions or gum issues. A complete oral examination is one way the doctor will determine whether you are a suitable candidate for implants or if other options are more suitable.

The entire process can span several months, depending on your healing and treatment plan.+

It typically entails the placement of implants, a period of healing to allow integration into the bone, and the placement of the crown. Same-day implants are an option in certain cases, and your dentist will help plan the schedule according to your unique circumstances.

All-on-4 implements four well-positioned posts to bear the full arch of teeth.+

This is because it provides stability with fewer implants. There can be more individual posts and crowns in full mouth implants. Both approaches can provide stable, natural-looking outcomes, depending on individual factors like bone structure and treatment goals.

While dental implants don’t develop cavities, they still require regular maintenance to keep surrounding tissues healthy.+

Get professional cleaning, daily brushing and flossing, and regular visits to the dentist. Your dentist will advise special materials or procedures depending on your type of implant.

Many seniors choose dental implants for improved comfort and function.+

It is not age that constitutes an obstacle; general health, adequate bone support, and healthy gums are important. They might improve chewing and self-confidence, so implants become a common replacement for removable dentures among elderly people.

Dental implants are titanium or ceramic posts that are inserted into the jawbone to serve as replacement roots for missing teeth.+

They act as natural teeth and support crowns, bridges or dentures. The implant integrates with your bone over time which provides a strong and lasting foundation for restorations.

Good candidates have sufficient jaw bone density with healthy gums and no uncontrolled medical conditions that will impair healing.+

Success is more likely in non-smokers with good oral hygiene. You will be assessed by a dentist who will confirm your ability to receive implants by conducting X rays.

Dental implants can last 15 years or more with proper oral care and routine dental checkups, often a lifetime.+

All those things are vital to their success, as is the quality of the bone, the oral hygiene factors, and the general condition of the client. Crowns can become worn over time and need to be replaced.

The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia or sedation to avoid discomfort.+

Afterward, patients mostly report mild soreness resembling tooth extraction. This pain is usually more than manageable with OTC meds. People get back to general activities within a few days, but recovery can differ.

Implant care is brushing twice daily, flossing, and routine cleanings as appropriate.+

You may be advised to use specialized tools, such as floss that is appropriate for implants or interdental brushes. Regular professional cleaning is crucial as it prevents peri-implantitis, which is an infection of the gums around the implant.

For select patients with healthy gums and strong bone density, same-day implants can be a safe option.+

This strategy permits a provisional crown to be placed immediately post implant procedure. But then again, not everyone is a candidate, and a dentist must first assess oral and general health.
